Young Carers
Who are young carers?
Young carers are children and young people who look after someone in their family who has an illness, a disability, a mental health problem or a substance misuse problem, taking on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. The person being cared for can be a parent, brother or sister, or another family member.
Although being a young carer may lead to positive experiences for a young person and their family, being a young carer can have a negative impact on some young peoples’ emotional and physical well being, it may create problems at school and restrict the opportunities to join in with leisure and social opportunities with other young people.
