Leave a legacy
...and improve someone’s life

Leaving a gift in your Will to Carers Northumberland will be a lasting legacy towards the support we give to carers in the county.

How to leave a legacy

Once you have considered gifts to family and friends you may feel in a position to consider a donation in your Will to Carers Northumberland.

Step by Step guide to leaving a legacy:

  1. Decide on a solicitor to write your Will.

    • You will find a list of solicitors on the law society website
    • The cost of the Will will vary according to where you live and how complex your Will is.
    • The solicitor should provide you with a cost upfront.

  2. Before you meet the solicitor you should draw up a list of your assets (ie house, savings, bonds, pensions, jewellery) and your debts (ie loans, mortgages).

  3. Plan who you want to leave a gift to.

  4. Choose the type of legacy to leave to each of those you are leaving a gift to:

    • Pecuniary – a gift of a fixed sum of money.  Remember the value of this gift will decrease over  time as the cost of living increases.
    • Residuary – a gift of a percentage of your estate (after all other pecuniary/specific legacies along with debts have been deducted).  This is often a useful method for dividing up your estate between a number of people and causes that are important to you.
    • Specific – a gift of a named item (ie jewellery or a car).
    • Life interest or reversionary legacy – a gift which will benefit someone in their lifetime.  For example a house that a relative can live in during their lifetime, but on their death passes to someone else of your choosing or to a charity.

  5. Decide on an executor who will ensure your wishes are followed.

  6. Wording a gift to Carers Northumberland:

    • Ensure you include the following clause:

"If at my death any charity named as a beneficiary in this Will or any Codicil hereto has changed its name or amalgamated with or transferred its assets to another body then my executors shall give effect to any gift made to such charity as if it had been made (in the first case) to the body in its changed name or (in the second place) to the body which results from such amalgamation or to which such transfer has been made."

    • Ensure when you include a gift to Carers Northumberland that you include our name and registered charity number (1122972).

    • Let us know about your gift.  If you are planning a gift to Carers Northumberland it is really useful for us to know so we can plan the future support we provide for carers.  You can let us know on Fundraising@carersnorthumberland.org.uk or by calling 07825 952609
